Finding optimal solutions for doing business

Organizations undergo redesign for a number of reasons.  Often organizational design or redesign is an attempt to improve performance or meet managerial goals for coordination and communication.  Such decisions are often taken after review of a few options and subsequent scenario planning, leading to new processes.

When designing or redesigning an organization,  a company must look at factors beyond the structure of the organization.  This includes the arrangement of people and their functions, with factors such as management decision-making processes; mission, vision and values; performance metrics; company culture; business strategy, and people practises.  Optimization becomes a competitive advantage when the infrastructure supports the business and personal needs of the people who work there.

When to consider a redesign?  When the present system is not adapting quickly enough to emerging complexity in the market.  Or when an organization wants to make significant changes in its system, purpose, performance or functionality, or when targeting a new market.
